Barndoors are the difference between a light you point and a light you control. Flag off the top to keep the beam off a background, close the sides to carve a narrow slash across a wall, or feather one leaf in to soften the edge of the pool.
On a rental day they save time: instead of rigging separate flags on C-stands, you shape the light at the fixture and move on to the next setup.
